  1. Lance Corporal W Handley DCM Army Cyclist Corps (4013) & Machine Gun Corps (118856) Distinguished Conduct Medal (GV) (4013 17/DIV:CYC:CO:ACC). Research & Citations Died of Wounds 29th October 1917 DCM - London Gazette 11/03/1916 "For conspicious gallantry. Lance Corporal Handley was in charge of a party of grenadiers, about ten strong, throwing grenades into the enemy trenches by a catapult. The strand of the catapult broke, and a powerful grenade with fuse nearly burnt down and dropped into our trench. He rushed forward and hurled the grenade over the parapet. It burst before reaching the ground" Further Information - He entered France 13th July 1915 and later transferred tp the MGC (Inf). He died at home on 29th October 1917 and is busried at Wareham Cemetery. DCM depicted in "Deeds that Thrilled the Empire"

When his battery was being shelled he superintended the collecting and removal of the wounded, setting a fine example of coolness and indifference to his own personal safety. He has on several occasions behaved in a similar manner, noteably on one occasion, in clearing the congestion of traffic which had been thrown into confusion at some cross roads by shell fire."
