Award of the Institute for the Aid of the Shipwrecked (Medalha do Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos)

Circular white enamel and silvered and gilt metal medal imposed on crossed anchors, with twisted rope suspension; the face with a circular central rayed gilt medallion with a plain central oval inscribed ‘SPES’ (Latin = Hope) within a white enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘FILANTHROPIA CARIDADE ISN’ (‘Philanthropy and Charity’ and the initials of the Institute); the reverse plain; enamel in excellent condition, some oxidisation spots to the reverse; on original age-faded ribbon with clasp. The Real Instituto de Socorros a Náufragos was established on 21 April 1892 and continued on an entirely voluntary basis until 1 January 1958 when funding difficulties led to its becoming a government organisation. It continues its invaluable work of saving lives at sea. This award, ‘for philanthropy and charity’ would have been awarded prior to 1 January 1958 for supporting the Institute. A superb example of a very striking piece of design.

Marine Rescue Silver award. Portuguese name: Medalha de filantropia e Caridade do Instituto de Socorro a Náufragos. Issued by the Instituto de Socorros a Naufragos (ISN), which is the Portuguese Institute for Lifesaving. Such awards are usually for rescue at sea and come in few variations and 3 classes. Originally established in 1908 and revised in 1913 with additional classes. Presented here is award with inscription: 'Filantropia - Caridade' (Philanthropy - Charity). Most wonderful decoration, rarely awarded in any class. Silver (well hallmarked), white enamel and gilt center/legend. Multi-part construction. Excellent condition. WW2 era vintage. Original ribbon with silver (hallmarked) clasp. Most likely by Da Costa in Lisbon. Hallmarks are very hard to read. Stunning piece, incredibly well-designed and super rare on the market. 38mm x 33mm.
