Розы на одежде - это в памятный день битвы при Миндене, кажется, 1 августа, Семилетняя война, 1759 г., где британцы и немцы разбили французов и саксонцев.

Тогда британские полки, проходя по зарослям розовых кустов, украсили шляпы и одежду их цветками.

Только 5 полков современной британской армии имеют эту битву как battle honour. Они перечислены ниже. Очень редкое отличие...

 

12th Foot: позднее Suffolk Regiment, сейчас Royal Anglian Regiment

20th Foot: позднее Lancashire Fusiliers, сейчас Royal Regiment of Fusiliers

23rd Foot: Royal Welch Fusiliers

25th Foot: сейчас King’s Own Scottish Borderers

37th Foot: позднее Hampshire Regiment, сейчас Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment.

Прошу прощения, перепутал этот полк с King's Own Scottish Borderers!

 

а на фотографии King's Own Royal Border Regiment носит розы действительно не в память Миндена, а просто по старой доброй традиции с 1704 г. в День Св. Георга.

The 'King's Own Royal Border Regiment', my local regiment, is no more. Tony Blair's penny-pinching regime has caused it to be merged with the 'King's Regiment', and the 'Queen's Lancashire Regiment' to form the new 'Duke of Lancaster's Regiment (King's, Lancashire and Border)'. This is but one example of the recent ill-thought amalgamations of infantry regiments. The picture below is of the new 'Duke of Lancaster's Regiment' marching from Carlisle Castle to gain the freedom of the City of Carlisle in July, 2006. Carlisle Castle was the traditional depot of the 34th (Cumberland)Regiment of Foot (raised in 1702) until 1881. When the 34th was amalgamated with the 55th (Westmorland) Regiment of Foot (raised in 1755) to form the 'Border Regiment' in 1881, the Castle remained as the depot until 1959. In 1959 the 'Border Regiment' was united with the 'King's Own Royal Regiment' (based in Lancaster) to form the 'King's Own Royal Border Regiment'. The 'King's Own Royal Regiment' had been formed in 1881 as a renaming of the '4th (The King's Own Royal) Regiment of Foot', raised in 1680.
